The fibers are protected by rubber. If the protection is damaged (cracks) then the belt needs to be replaced. Otherwise, the fibers do not age appreciably without use, and are good for 60k. The Nissan engineers are working off of data. Everyone else is working off of speculation, and calling it "common sense" to avoid having to think about it too much, no offense to Guapo. Reasonable people can disagree, and changing your belt more often won't hurt anything other than your wallet, just like you can change your oil every 50 miles if you like. You have fresher parts/fluids, and run the risk of a botched maintenance job, but other than that, it makes no difference. I just state the fact: the manual says change the belt at 60k, not at any particular age. Do what you like, but don't claim the manual says different.
